12 of 27 say it themselves

Are prop firms regulated?

No, and the reason is more useful than the answer. A broker is licensed because it holds your money. A prop firm never holds your money: you pay a fee for an evaluation, and if you pass, the firm pays you a share of the profit on an account that belongs to it. There is no deposit, so the rules that protect deposits have nothing to attach to.

That is not a scandal and it is not a loophole. It does mean the question worth asking is not “who regulates them” but what is in the account — and 12 of the 27 firms read here answer that in their own words.

The 12 that say the capital is simulated

Not an accusation and not an inference. Each of these is the firm's own wording, on its own page, with the date it was read.

What the other 15 mean, and what they do not

Goat Funded Trader, Fidelcrest, Lux Trading Firm, Audacity Capital, FXIFY, For Traders, Funding Traders, Moneta Funded, Maven Trading, Breakout, Crypto Fund Trader, OneFunded, DNA Funded, Blueberry Funded and Era Trade are not on that list. That means only one thing: nobody here has read wording from them on this point. It is not a finding that any of them claims the capital is live, and reading it that way would be an accusation the evidence does not support.

The distinction matters more here than almost anywhere else on this site, because the subject is whether a company is telling you the truth about your money. A gap in our reading is our gap, and it is labelled as ours.

Why a licence in the group does not cover you

Several prop firms sit in a group that also owns a licensed broker, and the licence gets quoted in marketing. A licence covers one entity doing one licensed activity. Selling an evaluation is not that activity, and the company selling it to you is usually not that entity.

This site holds 34 brokers whose licence could be confirmed on a public register, and the method for checking one yourself is written up because it is the only check that means anything. Run it on the entity named in the prop firm's terms and see which company comes back — that answer is worth more than the badge on the homepage.

What to look at instead

Three things, in order. What the firm says is in the account. When and how it pays, in writing, with the thresholds. And what its terms say happens to your position and your balance if it stops trading — the equivalent question for a broker has a legal answer, and here it usually has only a contractual one.

None of that requires trusting anybody. All three are published, and this site reads them for 27 firms one rule at a time.

Questions

Are prop firms regulated?
Not as brokers, because they are not brokers. A broker holds client money and is licensed for it; a prop firm charges a fee for an evaluation and, if you pass, pays you a share of profit on an account it owns. There is no client deposit to protect, so the licensing that protects deposits does not apply. That is not a loophole — it is a different product.
Is prop firm capital real money?
12 of the 27 firms read here say themselves that it is simulated: FTMO, FundedNext, The5ers, Topstep, Funding Pips, Alpha Capital Group, E8 Markets, Funded Trading Plus, HyroTrader, City Traders Imperium, Hola Prime and Blue Guardian. Each statement links to the firm's own page below. The payouts are real; what is simulated is the account the trades happen in.
Does a prop firm holding a broker licence make it safer?
It makes something else safer. A licence covers the licensed entity's licensed activity — usually brokerage — and an evaluation sold by a sister company is outside it. 34 of the brokers on this site hold a licence we could confirm on a register; not one of the prop firms here is among them.
How do I check a prop firm before paying?
Find the legal entity in the terms, not the brand on the homepage. Then read what the firm says about the capital, the payout schedule and what happens to open positions if the firm stops trading. Those three answers tell you more than any licence claim, because the licence usually belongs to a different company doing a different thing.
